Virgo

Virgo

August 23 through September 22

January 2012

MONTHLY OVERVIEW:

The year begins on an optimistic note, and you’re ready to embrace adventure. For once, you’re not planning out every second of your life—very un-Virgo-like, but so refreshing. Expansive Jupiter will spend the first half of 2012 in Taurus, your free-spirited ninth house. Some of your resolutions may include travel, learning a foreign language, going back to school, exploring religion, or starting your own business. You might teach, explore metaphysical topics, and seek wisdom from some offbeat sources.

With go-getter Mars in Virgo until July 3rd, you’re more open to trying new things than ever before. Consider this your own mini Eat, Pray, Love era, at least until June 11th. On that day, Jupiter will begin a yearlong visit to Gemini, your tenth house of structure and concrete ambitions. A clear path will arise in the second half of 2012. Until then, you have a planetary permission slip to “goof off”—which for you, just means becoming a more well-rounded person, steeped in the School of Life.

For the first three weeks of January, the Sun is in Capricorn, your pleasure-seeking fifth house. Romance and passion could be in the cards, especially when your ruler Mercury is here January 8-27. You have tons of energy, and you need some physical and emotional outlets. The more you play, the better—so hit the dance floor or karaoke bar, and stay on the move. You may also be a little dramatic during this time, so make sure you don’t go too over-the-top with your storytelling. You don’t want to expend all your energy getting worked up about a situation. Is it really that deep, Virgo? Vent, then move on and put your energies into things that make you joyful, giddy and dizzy with elation. (Imagine that!)

On January 20th, the Sun moves into Aquarius, your sixth house of health and organization. You can start those 2012 resolutions with more discipline then, and you’ll get an added boost from the Aquarius new moon on the 23rd. If there’s a new gym or fitness class you’d like to try, snag a guest pass and have fun checking out your options. Treat yourself to a new cookbook or a magazine subscription with healthy recipes and lifestyle tips. The key is to make everything an adventure now.

LOVE & ROMANCE:

New year, new love—or at least, renewed romance. The Sun is in Capricorn, your passionate fifth house, until January 23rd. Your mojo’s all fired up, and you’re ready for action! Single Virgos could have plenty of options, and you might consider speed dating or an online matchmaking site (yes, you). If that’s simply too lowbrow for your Virgoan sensibilities, get a little more glamorous. Wear bright colors, wild patterns, a little more makeup, or bold statement jewelry. Have fun with the way you present yourself (and let that sexy alter ego come out to play).

Your ruler Mercury, planet of communication, is also in Capricorn January 8-27. Words are important to Virgos—you’re a verbal sign that remembers everything you hear. You tend to take spoken and written exchanges literally, too. This month, be a little more playful with language. Flirt, banter, tease, seduce—you’re not beholden to follow through on everything you say. This is a nice time to exchange love letters, to write a sentimental tribute to your sweetie, and to be more emotionally expressive in general.

A casual flirtation could turn serious when love-planet Venus visits Pisces, your relationship sign, from January 23-February 7. Some Virgos may think of proposing, committing or in some way getting more serious. If you’re already there, harmonizing Venus just adds a pleasant flow to your relationship. Make an effort to keep things special. Dress up for each other, plan a memorable date, and take time away from all the modern distractions to be there with the one you love.

MONEY & CAREER:

Your life is zooming along, and you’re speeding to keep up with it. Assertive, ambitious Mars is in Virgo from November 11, 2011-July 3, 2012, making you eager to take chances and tackle personal initiatives. Mars is also helping you ask for what you want, pushing you to be more courageous and outspoken. A little chutzpah will do you right, Virgo. The best use of this cycle is to focus a little “selfishly” on your own dreams and desires. The more energy you pour into a personal project, the faster it will grow. Who would be a helpful teammate for this? The January 9th Cancer full moon illuminates your networking house. It’s a great day to meet new people, launch a website, or attend an event with a pocketful of business cards. A team project or collaboration could come together near this date.

Feel like you’re fielding too many fastballs at once? Mars will be retrograde (backward) from January 23-April 13, so you can tap the brakes a little then. You may need to temporarily scale back ambitious plans, or soften your approach a smidge. With Mars retrograde, it’s a thin line between gutsy and pushy, and you don’t want to give off that “high-pressure sales” vibe, particularly if you’re trying to get someone to cooperate. If people need more time to think things over, don’t hover or nag. Just go on and keep doing your thing—with or without them. During this cycle, it’s best to look before you leap. If you have to cancel or delay a launch, don’t worry. From mid-April until July, it’s full speed ahead, so you might as well make sure you’re as prepared as you can be.

Get organized—and create all your detailed, color-coded Virgo systems—when the Sun goes into Aquarius on January 20th. Aquarius rules your efficient sixth house (which is the Virgo-ruled part of the zodiac), so you have a month to geek out with your file folders, paper shredder and label-maker. This is a good time for doing behind-the-scenes research, organizing a budget, and streamlining your schedule. Is your work helping people or changing society for the better? January features a rare Saturn-Neptune trine that can help you make money while also making a difference. Follow an urge to “give back” or be of service—it will make your whole life worth living.

HEALTH: MIND, BODY & SOUL:

You’re in a playful mood during the first three weeks of January, so combine your exercise with pleasure—dancing, ice skating, even a burlesque class. On January 20th, the Sun enters Aquarius, your sixth house of health and fitness. You’ll have a month to set new structures and habits for the new year then. The January 23rd Aquarius new moon is a great day to start a new eating and fitness plan. You could also schedule checkups on or around this date.

Just don’t go overboard, Virgo. Active Mars goes retrograde (backward) January 23-April 13, and you’ll need to regulate your energy and stress levels. Your life has gotten incredibly fast-paced ever since Mars went into Virgo on November 10th of last year. Slow down a little during this accident-prone retrograde, because you could pull a muscle or injure yourself if you work out too vigorously now. Mars will be in your sign until July 3rd, so aim for a slow-and-steady lifestyle shift. Set long-term fitness goals, and skip the boot camps, marathons and extreme challenges. The beneficial Saturn-Neptune trine urges you to mix the spiritual and the practical. Create a simple daily practice, which could something as small as blessing your food or water before consuming, or doing a five-minute meditation before bed.
